I dont know if i approve of this, google wants to add a voice search on its google mobile program. im not a fan of voice activated calling and answering machines, so i doubt im going to be a fan of this. you would have to be in a really quiet place in order to search for something, and unless you can ask google questions like “where is there a pizza pizza in Thorold because i have the munchies” than i doubt it will be useful.
Google sees voice search as core

April 4, 2009 by jomo85My overall impression of the coarse before entering was that it was going to teach me about everything i already knew about social media. Little did i know i would be introduced to new concepts and ways on how to interact with people over the internet. It started with the first class and the use of ICT’s, its like you use these devices everyday but you dont realize how much your life depends on it. Not only was the use of its ICT’s interesting, but all the new ways we can communicate with one another. Social bookmarking was an interesting class to note, same with linkedin and the class on the different types of blogs. All in all i was overly impressed with the coarse because it accomplished what it was designed to do, and that is to open the eyes of the students and let them understand that there is an entire world out there that can be reached through social networking.
The information society is upon us and we should embrace it rather than push it aside. In todays society saying “i dont know how to do it, or what is that” wont cut it anymore because we have the luxury of google to find out the answers. We have information at our fingertips, we can learn about everything and anything, and we must embrace the knowledge. As the trend continues, and more and more people are becoming acquainted with the information society, look for the overall average of individuals IQ to go up, as the world will become increasingly sophisticated with more and more smart asses thinking they know everything.
China suggests switch from dollar
March 24, 2009 by jomo85China suggests switch from dollar
China’s surging economy is finally flexing its muscles, and doing so at a time when the US is at its weakest. Is the balance of power changing? is this the start of the end of the US empire? are we at the brink of nuclear warfare? okay the last one was a bit out there but economically the world is changing as we know it, we should all pay attention to this
My Privacy Strategies
March 24, 2009 by jomo85The measures that i take to maintain my privacy online is to make sure that if i do give any personal information on a website, that it is a credible website with a long history of success in regards to privacy. so bank websites and ebay are good ones to start with. I also decided to take down pictures on my facebook that show my house and other personal belongings, because i dont want anybody to know what i got and where im stashing it. I do this because its a crazy world out there and hope to live as safe as possible. the last thing i need right now is to be stalked by some weirdo. i also try to avoid revealing my postal code at all costs, only when i absolutely have to will i submit my postal code, if not then i usually make one up.
I wouldnt mind some information about my education as well as some medical information. It would be nice to know what my record is in school, and how institutions perceive me. Also having access to some medical information can keep you and your family updated in the status of your health. which can be a good thing because you can provide assistance to your family member if they require it, usually theres too much pride to ask for assistance so this would give you a better understanding of what their going through.
My Privacy Issues
March 24, 2009 by jomo85The privacy issues that are most important to me have to be my personal information such as phone numer, home address and bankin information. The reasons for this is because similar to holding on to my wallet for dear life, i would like to hold on to my personal information because i run the risk of being robbed or mimicked by hackers. My sister had over $20,000 stolen from her line of credit account because somebody got a old of there bank statements, but was able to trace the account through her facebook page because they got her phone number and address, and used it as security answers for the banker.
I try and limit the information i share on facebook for two reasons. first, i feel that some personal information is best kept to yourself, if you display everything about yourself on a website, then chicks dont want to get to know you better because they already know everything about you. I also think its cheesy to write all your interests and hobbies down to the T, because it shows vulnerability and a lot of time on your hand to do it. Second, i refuse to display personal information about me because of the growing fear of stalkers and weirdos that can find you and do some awful things to you. im keen on keeping myself as safe as possible, and by not displaying your house, address, phone number, and even institution, i can achieve that.
As stated earlier, my sister had somebody go through her garbage to find her bank statement. They then used information from the statement and from her facebook page to put a face on the statement and used it to take out $20,000 from her line of credit. Luckily my bro-in-law caught on to it right away, as they were able to make the claim and get their money back. They ended up finding the guy, who was in his early 20’s attending some Sheridan College computer engineering course.
The issues that pertain in my example show that through Social networking sites, individuals may not just have their personal information stolen from them, but their physical identity as well. By puting a face to the statement, and knowing that my sister was planning on going on a trip soon and knowing her mothers maiden name etc. The guy was able to con the bank in lending him a significant amount of money. Our privacy is something that should not be taken for granted, because once exposed, it can never be taken back. Movie stars want privacy, and we want more recognition, there must be a reason they want their privacy.
Three new understandings
March 17, 2009 by jomo85The first concept of the course that i have learned has to do with social networking. i found it rather interesting when we had to create a nexus network web. this gave me a clear understanding of my social networks and the social capital behind each connection. i was able to conduct a social network analysis and map out the connections i have between individuals, groups and organizations.
The second concept i learned is learned is the growing popularity of micro-blogging, spcificaly twitter. Before the class i never participated in micro-blogging and never really heard of anybody doing it. But now its all over the news, celebrities, politicians, and athletes are using twitter and its taking the media by storm. My cousin is at the university of toronto and is learning to become a journalist, and she told me that every journalist in the world needs to use twitter, thats what they are teaching them. i find that remarkable, and i now use it, and know how to use it thanks to the course.
The third concept of the course that i have learned is the benefits of social bookmarking. i never herd of social bookmarking before, but i now know that individuals can share their bookmarks with one another and share their information and sources with one another. i see the benefits of social bookmarking specifically with teachers ,because they can share their research with one another for tests, presentations and lessons.
My Bikini Search
March 14, 2009 by jomo85i searched the word “Bikini” on google, yahoo, and live.com and came across some different results. first, the google results had an explanation of what a bikini is via Wikipedia, next was a Bikini Village Customer blog, then Videos of bikini’s, the a Bikini Boot Camp, which was a fitness gym in calgary. The Yahoo search results were Women’s Bikinis rates, Bikini.com, Christina which is a bikini supplier, and Everything Bikini, which was a all knowing bikini website. finally, the live search resulted in Top images for bikini, a minimal bikini wear site called Wicked Weasel Bikinis, and a definition of bikini.
i noticed that they were all fairly different, where the yahoo search was more of a capitalist search resulting in manufacturers names and how i can buy some bikinis. google was more of an educational/opinion on bikinis, and live.com had more images and treated bikinis as a sex symbol.
for further research i entered the wicked bikini weasel website..the rest of the weekend went well…
My Google Searches
March 14, 2009 by jomo85when looking at my search words i think an outside party might notice that a lot of the searches i do are either for geographical or educational. i read a lot of global news stories, so when i dont know a person, place or thing i google it. for instance, i was reading up on the madoff scam and i googled “ponzi scheme” and read up on charles ponzi. I was reading about the nasa failed launch, and googled “nasa space stations”. a lot of my searches also revolve around cities, countries, and business locations. If i had a GPS system then i wouldnt type in the location of some businesses or streets, but i dont so im forced to google it. i guess the outside party would consider me to be a nerd, but i have always been interested in broadening my horizons. other searches include: Michelangelo, da vinci, mozart, sputnik, neutrons, Manhattan project, bio-fuel, and benefits of green tea. i really dont think my search words would be that valuable, unless outside parties would view my search words and want to read up on them themselves. but either then that i wouldnt see how they would be of any value for outsiders
Facebook users suffer viral surge
March 2, 2009 by jomo85Facebook has been targeted by malicious hackers seeking to steal valuable data from members..
has the social networking hacking begun?
my linkedin profile2
March 2, 2009 by jomo85i provided some past working experience on my profile. i guess thats the basics of constructing a resume. i also provided a brief description of my interests and education. im not sure i want to put anything on like my email or phone number. i was a bit worried about how we had to put our postal code. i thought that it wasnt necessary to include that, because even if you do get contacted it wont be by mail.
i see the benefits of this website, and as we move forward with social networking, i can see it coming in handy when trying to apply for a job. i would not use it to socialize with individuals, only because i have msn and facebook to do that. i would use this website strictly professionally, and try and network myself to businesses and employers in order to find the right job for me.
